HYBRID ENERGY AS
Business Description
Hybrid Energy AS designs and sells complete waste energy recovery systems and hybrid heat pumps to the food industry and other major energy consumers. The company bases its products on hybrid heat pumps using water and ammonia as working fluid.

The hybrid high temperature heat pumps are a result of a development process that started at IFE (Institute for Energy Technology at Kjeller) in 1996.

In 2004 the company Hybrid Energy AS was formed to design, build and commercialize hybrid heat pumps. In 2007 the first single stage hybrid heat pump of 650 kW was installed and put in operation at Nortura. Payback including all cost was two years for the installation.

The products’ most system critical components are patented. The patented heat pump is the only system in the world producing temperatures up to 130 degrees Celsius with standard industrial components and pressure.

Status
Hybrid Energy has obtained proof of concept through successful establishment of customer relationship, including installation and delivery of 6 industrial installations.

Due to the hybrid pump’s energy-saving features Innovasjon Norge in 2009 granted funding for an IRD project with a total budget of 14 million, which will run over a period of two years. The final stage of the product development is standardizing the product regards to the effect in kW and in size (containerization) which will make a transportable “plug-and-play” product ready for the world market.

The company now enters the commercialization and expansion phase, with focus on product, marketing and sales domestically and internationally, with establishment of a US subsidiary in August 2010.

Competitive and Technological Advantages
A combined absorption and compression heat pump based on an ammonia/water system has several advantages in itself and compared to competitors.

The heat can be delivered at notably higher temperatures (130 C). The pump allows for reduced heat exchanging losses for source and sink fluids with high temperature changes and the temperature glide performance may be adjusted by changing the capacity of the compressor compared to the capacity of the liquid pump.

There is no use of harmful greenhouse components, only a mixture of water and ammonia, and it does not represent a legionella and salmonella contamination risk.
