Nicarnica Aviation develops and sells IR camera-based technology to identify ash and other particles in the air. The company's technology is based on more than 20 years of research at the Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU).
The company has developed camera-based products that can detect and measure volcanic ash and other airborne particles, both for ground- and in-flight use.
On June 4 2010 Nicarnica Aviation entered into a collaborative project with EasyJet and the UK Civil Aviation Authority's regarding the company’s AVOID™ System. The AVOID solution is a combination of IR systems which will be used to detect ash and other airborne dangers. The system uses two infrared cameras mounted on the tail section of the plain. The monitor placed in the cockpit conveys in-flight warnings to the pilot of ash particles within a range of at least 100km and up to 15km in height above the aircraft.
Status
Nicarnica Aviation AS was founded with NILU, Campus Kjeller and Norsk Innovasjonskapital among the shareholders and agreements are signed with NILU for the rights to commercialize the technology. Pilot projects are being planned with key players within the international airplane and aviation industry, hereunder EasyJet, the UK Civil Aviation Authority, Boeing and Airbus.
Competitive and Technological Advantages
Nicarnica Aviation’s technology precisely detects fine ash and other airborne particles that represent a danger to the aviation industry. The technology can also be used to detect and reduce the dangers related to turbulence. The systems produce high resolution data and real-time 3D images. Nicarnica Aviation’s special IR-camera and the AVOID™ system can be mounted on board aircrafts and can alert about ash clouds within a range of 100 km. Thus pilots receive notice of volcanic ash 5 minutes before the plane reach the ash cloud and can manoeuvre around the obstacle to layers of air with lower concentrations. Nicarnica Aviation’s products possess inert geographical flexibility as they are not affected by harsh climates.
